Statement made. The defending champions welcomed Brooklyn FC to The Stables on August 15th and made it very clear that the offseason didn't slow them down one bit. A 3-0 win in front of the home crowd was exactly the kind of performance you want to see from a team that's chasing a third trophy in the same calendar year. The first half was tight. Lex Sporting controlled possession and generated the better chances — including a 35th minute opportunity where Catherine Barry controlled the ball beautifully at the top of the box, only to send it straight at Brooklyn's goalkeeper and newly named captain Bre Norris. Brooklyn had a few looks of their own on the counter, but neither side could find the net going into halftime. The home crowd was patient, and the team rewarded them in the second half. The floodgates opened in the 58th minute in the most fitting way possible. McCain rocketed a shot off the crossbar, and there was Barry — using every inch of her six-foot frame to beat everyone to the rebound and steer it past the keeper. Just 158 seconds later, it was 2-0. Allison Pantuso picked out a perfectly weighted ball over the top of Brooklyn's defense, McCain ran onto it and calmly slotted it home with her right foot. That goal was a historic one — with it, McCain became the first player ever to reach 20 career goals in the Gainbridge Super League, further cementing her status as the league's all-time leading scorer. The stadium absolutely loved it. Hannah White put the finishing touch on things in the 82nd minute, converting a first-time volley off an assist from Alyssa Bourgeois to make it 3-0 and send everyone home happy. Oh, and the elephant in the room — the goalkeeper situation. Ryan Campbell, on loan from Gotham FC in her first appearance in a Lex Sporting jersey, kept a clean sheet on debut. After all the offseason questions about replacing Kat Asman, that's about as good a first impression as you could ask for. If the rest of the Fall season looks anything like this, defending the title might not be as hard as people thought.
