Champions don't get the offseason to relax — they get a target on their back. After completing a stunning worst-to-first turnaround and winning both the Players' Shield and the Gainbridge Super League championship in the 2025/26 season, Lex Sporting Women are gearing up for a unique shortened Fall 2026 campaign before the league transitions to a spring-to-fall calendar in 2027. The goal? Become the first professional sports team in North American history to win two distinct league titles in the same calendar year. The biggest news of the offseason was also the most bittersweet. Kat Asman, who was nothing short of brilliant in goal all season — earning the Gainbridge Golden Glove award and posting a league-record 12 clean sheets — headed to the NWSL on July 1st when her parent club, the Orlando Pride, loaned her to Denver Summit for the remainder of their season. Losing a goalkeeper of that caliber is never easy, but the club moved quickly to address it. First came the signing of Marz Josephson on July 9th, a familiar face around Lexington who spent two seasons as the starting goalkeeper for the Kentucky Wildcats. Josephson had actually trialed with Lex Sporting near the end of the championship season, so this wasn't a cold call — the club knew what they were getting. Then on July 16th came the bigger splash: a loan acquisition of Ryan Campbell from NWSL side Gotham FC. The 24-year-old Stanford and UCLA product was sitting behind two goalkeepers on Gotham's depth chart and was eager for playing time. "Lexington SC is the right fit for me at this point in my career," Campbell said after the move was announced. Between the two of them, the goalkeeper situation looks solid heading into August. On the outfield side, the core of the championship team is intact. Fourteen players from the title-winning roster are returning, including the full house of superstars: Golden Boot winner Catherine Barry, all-time league leading scorer Addie McCain, Defensive Player of the Year Allison Pantuso, captain Taylor Aylmer, and McKenzie Weinert. Hannah Sharts departed via mutual contract termination, which opens the door for some of the new additions to step into the back line rotation. The club added three new midfielders in Mac Midgley from the University of Tennessee, Katie Murray, and Ally Perry — who arrives with international experience after making three appearances for Juventus FC in Italy before joining Lex Sporting. Gracie Falla, a defender who signed in January after completing her college career at South Carolina, will also join the group for the Fall season after waiting out the spring campaign. So what should fans expect? Honestly, it's hard not to feel good about this. The preseason poll has Lex Sporting ranked No. 1 in the league — and it's hard to argue with that given who's coming back. The question mark is in goal with Asman gone, but Campbell comes with serious pedigree and the hunger to prove herself. The Fall schedule is 14 matches — seven at home and seven on the road — with the opener at home against Brooklyn FC on August 15th. If this team can stay healthy and pick up where they left off, a third trophy in one calendar year isn't just wishful thinking. It's a real possibility.
