What a way to close out a regular season. Three games, two wins, a draw, a record crowd, the first trophy in club history, and the No. 1 seed heading into the playoffs. The Gals in Green saved some of their best moments for last. First up was the long trip to Spokane on May 2nd, where the two clubs played out a 0-0 draw — their fourth scoreless result against each other this season. It sounds anticlimactic, but the result was enough to move Lex Sporting into first place in the Gainbridge Super League standings. Spokane made it difficult all night, with their coach noting her back line was "lights out" and credit where it's due — they were. Catherine Barry had an early chance but the Zephyr defense held firm. The bigger story was the defensive side of things for Lexington. Kat Asman and the backline recorded their 10th clean sheet of the season, tying Sporting JAX for the most in the league. Coach Kimura summed it up well after the match: "Shutouts are huge. Ten clean sheets is unbelievable — it's very hard to do." Eight days later, Brooklyn FC came to Lexington and left with nothing. McKenzie Weinert put on a show, scoring twice and earning the unofficial title of the "Mayor of New York City" for her habit of scoring against Brooklyn — her goals on Sunday were her third and fourth against them this season. She opened the scoring in the 39th minute off an Addie McCain assist, then Catherine Barry slipped one in at the 44th minute — her 16th goal of the season and the moment she officially became the first player in Gainbridge Super League history to record 20 goal contributions in a single season. Weinert completed the brace in the 45th minute off a Sarah Griffith assist, and just like that the club went into halftime up 3-0. Brooklyn pulled one back in the 69th minute via Rebecca Cooke, but Kat Asman denied Cooke a second with a spectacular penalty save in the 86th minute to hold the 3-1 result and secure all three points. Then came Saturday, May 16th — the last regular season home match and the one that will be talked about for a while. Over 6,000 fans packed the stadium, a record for a Lex Sporting women's match, and they nearly had to wait forever for something to celebrate. Tampa Bay Sun FC dug in and kept it 0-0 deep into the 90th minute. Then Weinert was brought down in the box, and up stepped Addie McCain. The crowd held its breath. McCain took a breath, fired left, and beat the keeper who dove the wrong way. The stadium erupted. It was McCain's ninth goal of the season, making her the third Lex Sporting player to reach at least nine alongside Barry (16) and Weinert (10). The club, and the fans, then had to wait for the result in Jacksonville, where Carolina Ascent needed to beat Sporting JAX to hand Lex Sporting the Players' Shield. Those of us watching from home were glued to our phones, texting back and forth as the match played out at the same time — every update from Jacksonville sending a new wave of nervous energy through the group chat. When the final whistle blew in Florida and Carolina had beaten JAX 3-1, the phones lit up all at once. Lexington SC claimed the No. 1 seed and the Players' Shield, the first trophy in club history. The celebrations probably lasted longer than anyone expected for a game the team wasn't even playing in. The regular season is over and the numbers are staggering. Eleven clean sheets. Fifty-two goals scored. The league's best scorer. A record-setting unbeaten run. And now a home playoff run where every match will be played in front of their own crowd. The Gals in Green have built something special this season, and the postseason is just getting started.
