Well, that was fun to watch.
Lexington SC went into Al Lang Stadium on the Fourth of July to face a Tampa Bay Rowdies team that came in leading the entire USL Championship in points, and left with a 4-1 win that honestly wasn't as close as the scoreline even suggests. Xavier Zengue and Nick Firmino both scored early goals while Oliver Semmle made a key penalty save as Lexington SC took a 4-1 victory against the Tampa Bay Rowdies at Al Lang Stadium on Saturday night. USL Championship
Watching from home, this didn't look like the same team that's been grinding out results one goal at a time. Lexington jumped in the lead in the 12th minute when Zengue capitalized after Braudilio Rodrigues won possession at the top of the Rowdies' penalty area, sending the ball into the path of the right back for a sharp low finish, and then doubled its advantage two minutes later when Phillip Goodrum was able to get in behind the Tampa Bay back line and draw the goalkeeper before setting up Firmino for a simple finish into the open net. Two goals in the opening quarter-hour against a defense that had barely been breached all season — that's not luck, that's a game plan executed to perfection.
Tampa Bay had a way back into it when they were handed a penalty, but Semmle denied Russell Cicerone's shot to the left side, snuffing out any hope of a comeback before it could start. Seven minutes later, Marcus Epps made it three for the visitors as he cut inside from the left and sent a low shot to the bottom-right corner of the net, and Tarik Scott added a fourth late to put an exclamation point on the night.
What stood out most watching this one unfold wasn't just the goals — it was how connected everyone looked. The buildup play, the runs off the ball, the timing on those early strikes. This is a team that's starting to figure out who it is, and it couldn't have picked a better opponent to show it against.
Two home dates that could change everything
Here's the exciting part: Lexington gets Louisville City on the road next in the Prinx Tires USL Cup, but then comes home for back-to-back regular season matches — New Mexico United on July 15 and Oakland Roots on July 22.. The Western Conference is absurdly tight right now, with the whole table separated by a dozen points. Two wins in front of the home crowd wouldn't just be nice — they would vault this team up and into the thick of the playoff picture. Buckle up, Lexington.
